<p><span style="font-size: 15px;">Once I got over the shock of not being on a Boeing 787 Dreamliner but rather an Airbus A340 &#8211; 600 that until 6 months ago was languishing in retirement in Tarbes-Lourdes-Pyréenés Airport, France, I really enjoyed this flight which had the added bonus of touching down an hour early in San Francisco too.</span></p></div>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><p>When Sir Richard Branson and Virgin Atlantic do something, it’s always big and bringing the Airbus 340 &#8211; 600 (Registration G-VNAP) out of retirement last year was a huge investment for the company when the Boeing Dreamliner engine curse struck.</p>
<p>Whilst the Inflight Entertainment isn’t the most modern the outside paint job and decals proclaiming “a big virgin atlantic thank you” have given this ‘Mature French Lady’ from Toulouse aptly named “Sleeping Beauty Rejuvenated” new lease of life and she made light work of this trek to the West Coast of America in just over 10 hours.</p></div>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><p>Despite being bused to a remote stand between The Heathrow Tower and Gate 22, pushback was more or less on time and the short queue for the runway (09R) meant that the airborne time was shortly after 11:40 so only around 10 minutes late departing.</p>
<p>Whilst I have done a few Runway 09R departures from London Heathrow, it was nice turn left rather than right off the runway which afforded stunning views on an autumnal day of Wembley Stadium and North London before coasting up the centre of England over Luton, Northampton, Leicester and Manchester before skirting Glasgow and out over The Hebrides.</p>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><p class="p1">From there the routing took us to the South of Iceland before making land again over Greenland, Baffin Bay with that perinatal favourite of East Coast Transatlantic flights Hudson Bay to the South before heading further through Canada and the Northern Territories with Alberta on the right hand side and Manitoba and the left hand side of the aircraft.</p>
<p class="p1">After that we passed Calgary and Winnipeg before heading into the USA and passing over the states of Washington and Oregon before California and the Pacific Coast became a welcome sight!</p></div>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><p class="p1">The onboard service was good. After a quick initial round of drinks, lunch arrived equally quickly. I opted for the meatballs and pasta dish which included a salad starter and a cake desert all washed down with a cheeky French red wine! Lunch was followed by a round of coffee and tea, then a round of brandy or Bailey’s. Another 90 minutes lapsed at which point ice cream arrived.</p>
<p class="p1">And whilst the Airbus 340 &#8211; 600 doesn’t have the ‘Snack Wall’ of the Boeing Dreamliner, there was a plentiful supply of snacks and drinks available from the gallery. If the truth be told, I didn’t really need to snack as 6 hours into the flight another round of drinks appeared with a food choice of a hot cheese and tomato or a steak pasty too. Finally afternoon tea was served 90 minutes prior to landing</p>
<p class="p1">I must confess I didn’t really touch the Inflight Entertainment during the flight apart from using the ‘Moving Map’ to research this blog post. I had already loaded the iPad with music and movies.</p></div>

<p>And today was no exception with views of the coastal town of Salsulito, the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz and downtown San Francisco before coasting in down San Francisco Bay where the aircraft makes a 180 degree turn near Mountain View, Sunnyvale and Cupertino to line up with the Northern parallel runways at San Francisco International Airport.</p></div>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><p>The Cambria Hotel and Suites was a great affordable find and just a couple of miles from Los Angeles International Airport.</p>
<p>The hotel is not your normal airport hotel, in fact in is in the middle of four corporate office blocks including Mattel. For me this was perfect as it was quiet and with no noise such as traffic. I loved the clean simple furnished rooms, the ability to do laundry plus being able to relax by the pool and the patio area in the evening in front of the log fire heater.</p>
<p>In terms of eating, there&#8217;s a host of restaurants just a short walk away. It took me around 10 minutes to walk to Five Guy&#8217;s which is just around the corner with Starbucks and several other restaurants. There is also a huge Walgreens and Ralph&#8217;s supermarket there too.</p>
<p>If you like walking, then the Manhattan Village Shopping Mall, Best Buy and Fry&#8217;s are about a 20 minute nice walk away. Getting around was easy too. The beaches were a short $8 Uber ride away and I used Uber to go to Santa Monica too which cost $20.</p>
<p>The hotel does offer a free shuttle to LAX which is shared with two other hotels and an off airport parking company who supply the shuttle. I only used it once and it was fine. Just make sure that you leave yourself plenty of time if using.</p>
<p>All in all this was a great a hotel for me and I will be back next time I am in Los Angeles.</p></div>

<p>This was my 1st experience of Upper Class from Heathrow, and a present to myself for working over Christmas &amp; New Year. It was booked on a Miles Redemption Fare straight after Christmas.</p>
<p>Lets say from the outset that this flight was an absolute delight to be on. Having flown with Virgin Atlantic since 1994 I have no hesitation in saying that this was Virgin Atlantic at its very best, and Upper Class with a Swagger in its step.</p>
<p>From a splendid Clubhouse experience, through super attentive Cabin Crew on the Upper Deck who understood the meaning of a Freedom Menu, and had no problem with me eating 4 hours into the flight, and who regularly came to check if I needed anything, to a Flight Service Manager, (F.S.M.), who spent a considerable amount of time with each and every one of us talking about New York, passing on tips, and asking for feedback on the Virgin Upper Class product, and the associated service, this flight was a joy to behold.</p>
<p>The line from the F.S.M.; Your feedback is very important to me, and Im so delighted that youve chosen to give it; actually made me feel very a special passenger!</p>
<p>So another long weekend shopping extravaganza trip to New York began with an overnight stay at the Crowne Plaza just off Junction 4 of the M4. Despite living under an hour from Heathrow I elected to stay over as the Crowne Plaza had an offer of 69 per night including 15 days parking via Holiday Extras. At that price, and with parking alone at Parking Express coming out at over 50 I thought it would rude not too!</p>
<p>After a very comfortable night, Friday morning soon dawned, and I caught the Hoppa Bus from the Crowne Plaza to Terminal 3 just before 8am. Early I know for a 2PM flight but I wanted to make maximum use of the Clubhouse ! The journey costs 4, and thanks to the Bus Lane on the Heathrow Spur Road, and Tunnel, I was deposited outside Terminal 3 in 10 minutes. Even at this time of the morning the Traffic was stationary back to the M4!</p>
<p>Check In was an absolute breeze. I was seen straight away at the Upper Class desk by a very friendly Agent, who issued a Clubhouse invitation followed by instructions on how to access the new Wing via the lift. All in all a very pleasant experience.</p>
<p>On exiting the lift next to the Upper Class Check Counters, youre faced with a huge glass door that wouldnt look out of place on the Star Ship Enterprise ! Your enter your Boarding Card into the reader on the wall, and then the door swings open ! Next you turn right, walk down the long corridor before your Passport is checked, and then youre though into the normal Terminal 3 Security Screening Area. With 3 dedicated channels waiting, I was though in under 60 seconds, and the B.A.A Security staff were very pleasant for once. After that I neatly side stepped the ongoing, Shoe Carnival, and then on to the Clubhouse. All in all Check In to Clubhouse was well under 10 minutes.</p>
<p>The Clubhouse is such a haven of tranquillity, and is a world way from the madding crowds of Terminal 3. I was welcomed with a huge smile, and no sooner than I was inside, and before I had chance to sit down, drink orders were taken, and promptly delivered. Then from the menu I chose the full English Breakfast washed down with a Bucks Fizz! After surfing the net, and a couple more drinks I was wonderfully pampered in the Cowshed with a facial, and a scalp massage while the treatment mask is on. This was so relaxing, so much so that it very nearly sent me to sleep ! After some more surfing I managed a fresh Salmon Bagel followed by Ice Cream for lunch before heading for the Gate shortly before the scheduled boarding time of 12.45PM. During my time in the Clubhouse I was impressed with the level of service from the staff who were constantly coming over to see if I needed anything.</p>
<p>Todays Gate was almost next to the Clubhouse, so after a short walk I was in the Gate Area looking out at Tinker Belle my home in the sky for the next 7 hours. Boarding commenced some 10 minutes after arrival at the Gate, and was strictly controlled meaning that being Upper Class, I was 1st on being welcomed at the aircraft door by name by the F.S.M. Shortly afterwards I was upstairs settling in to 7A for the flight to John F. Kennedy Airport (J.F.K.)</p>
<p>In fact I hadnt even had chance to sit down before a member of the Crew came over to take a drinks order. It was at this point I asked for a Sleep Suit which promptly arrived a minute later with the Champagne. Then she was back again asking about my plans for dinner asking what I would like so that she could reserve it for later as I asked to eat about 4 hours into the flight. Then the In Flight Beautician came by and said that despite the fact Id received a treatment in the Clubhouse, shed probably be able to get to me on the flight. Finally before take off the cabin crew were back again with another glass of Champagne !</p>
<p>We pushed shortly before 2PM, and were airborne some 10 minutes later from the Westerly Runway heading out of Windsor before turning right and eventually out over Manchester for the Trans Atlantic leg of the journey before making land again at Goose Bay and tracking the Eastern Seaboard to New York.</p>
<p>Once airborne the F.S.M. was round with the extras for the Amenity Kit at which point we talked about New York for a good 10 minutes during which time he offered loads of help, and advice. No sooner than he left the other 3 members of crew on the Upper Deck were round chatting to passengers, getting more drinks, and making sure everyone had everything they wanted. This was to be the norm throughout the whole flight. No need to push the call bell as they always seemed to be in the Cabin rather than the Galley.</p>
<p>About an hour into the flight In Flight Beautician returned and took me downstairs for my treatment, which was the Head &amp; Shoulders massage which again left me relaxed, and nearly asleep!</p>
<p>After that I grabbed a couple of hours sleep, watched a couple of episodes of 30 Rock, and spot on schedule at 6PM dinner arrived The current Lamb dish with Red Cabbage, Spinach, and Mash Potato was put simply mouth watering, as was desert, a very tasty Champagne Chocolate Mouse.</p>
<p>Shortly after dinner the F.S.M. returned again to check everything was OK, which was I took the time to praise both the exceptional crew, and the food. I caught up with a couple of episodes of Only Fools and Horses before another hours sleep at which point Tea arrived in the form of some very tasty sandwiches, and pastries.</p>
<p>Alias all good things must come to an end, and soon we were on the descent to J.F.K. landing 20 minutes early. Unfortunately this was lost in a long taxi to the Gate, and waiting an aircraft to depart said Gate!</p>
<p>The only thing I cant comment on is Priority Baggage as I hit the back of the Air India flight at Immigration which was slow, and took 40 minutes.</p>
<p>Still least the case was waiting when I got through!</p>

<p>From<acronym class="id56" title="OLCI: Online Check-In"> OLCI</acronym>, and Twilight Check In, the simply delightful/personal service in the London Gatwick Clubhouse from the Waitresses, the girls in the V Touch Salon for whom nothing was too much trouble, to a friendly Flight Service Manager who took time out talking to everyone in Upper Class, and a Cabin Services Supervisor who took the time, and trouble to chat at length to me at Bar, my faith in choosing Virgin Atlantic for Transatlantic travel has been restored after a fairly dour experience last November. (See previous travel report).</p>
<p>Its just a shame that Virgin Atlantic cant control the so called Fastrack Security that was slower than the M25 on a good day, and the ability of passengers to complain loudly in public when theyve been sent to the back of the line for not filling in the correct Immigration &amp; Customs Paperwork !</p>
<p>And so another vacation starts ! This trip was somewhat complicated, and difficult to plan due to an inflexible holiday dictate at work, coupled with the fact I wanted to spend a short time in Orlando to visit some favourite shops, then on to Boston to see a friend before flying back to the UK in the 6 days holiday I had to take or lose !</p>
<p>The solution was to drive to London Heathrow last Wednesday afternoon, leave the car in the NCP, and then catch the National Express<acronym class="id30" title="coach: American term for Economy Class"> Coach</acronym> to London Gatwick for an overnight stay at the Premier Travel Inn located a short walk from the North Terminal before flying to Orlando, then to Boston with jetBlue, and finally back to London from Logan International Airport. This was also by far the cheapest option by nearly 1000 pounds using a Miles Plus Money Option, Upper Class out Economy back. Factoring in jetBlue at a measly $49 the cost of flights was just under 800 pounds.</p>
<p>Id already done<acronym class="id56" title="OLCI: Online Check-In"> OLCI</acronym> at home to reserve my seat, 7A, but also took advantage of the Twilight Check In, to get rid of the bags, and ensure that I made a beeline for the Clubhouse in the morning without anything getting in the way ! Didnt bargain for a long wait at Fastrack Secuirty !</p>
<p>Interesting the Check In Staff whilst wearing the Virgin uniform now have Swissport logos on their name badges.</p>
<p>Its also interesting to note that security is very visible these days with Armed Officers, and Sniffer Dogs patrolling the South Terminal. I got the impression that they were there as a visible presence rather than looking for anyone in particular.</p>
<p>Thursday morning dawned, and a little after 7am I was at the Virgin Clubhouse. No sooner than Id sat down, and I was being offered a Menu, and asked what Id like to drink. This was to continue throughout my stay. The girls in the V Touch Salon took care of me with a Sensational Shave, and sorted out my hair, whilst the Shoe Shine<acronym class="id5" title="MAN: Manchester"> Man</acronym> took care of my shoes.</p>
<p>I left the Clubhouse prior to<acronym class="id73" title="VS: Virgin Atlantic"> VS</acronym> 27 being called as I wanted a quick look inside the Duty Free Shop on my way to the gate. As previously reported Gates 31 to 38 are in the process of being updated. The result of this is that theres now 2 entrances to each jetway ensuring Priority Boarding to the left, and Economy to the right. Virgin also have a huge pull up magnetic display board to highlight this. Problem is that they only seem to have one which was brought across after the departure of the<acronym class="id45" title="LAS: Las Vegas"> Las</acronym> Vegas flight ! It doesnt however stop people crowding around the entrance to the gate, who refuse to move when asked ! Some things in life never change if you read the other TRs on this site !</p>
<p>Having got pulled for Secondary Screening, I was soon taking my seat on Barbarella, and being offered Champaign. There was time for 2 of these prior to departure which occurred in a snowstorm, and involved engine power being held on for some 20 seconds prior to the brakes being released for the take off role to the East over the M23.</p>
<p>Once in the air, it was a left turn of 270 degrees that saw the aircraft head towards Southampton, and then out across the Atlantic making land again over Canada before dropping down the East Coast of America via Boston, New York, etc .. some 250 miles off the coast.</p>
<p>The service levels on the flight were good. Soon after take off the<acronym class="id39" title="FSM: Flight Service Manager"> FSM</acronym> came round to meet everyone, and hand out the Amenity Kits, she also returned to serve the Wine with Lunch, and at other times through the flight. This was backed up by a Cabin Services Supervisor plus 2 other staff who ensured that nobody wanted for anything. They all took time out talking to passengers</p>
<p>The menu has also changed since my last flight which gave me the chance to enjoy the following 3 courses, Stilton &amp; Leek Soup, Lamb, and Ice Cream with fresh fruit all of which was washed down with a delightful White Wine !</p>
<p>Afternoon Tea consisted of 2 sandwiches, and a choice of cakes. There was also Ice Cream available between the 2 meals along with snacks, and drinks on the Bar.</p>
<p>The entertainment also seems to have improved with a more varied selection. I took time out to watch the latest Wallace &amp; Gromet movie plus A 40 Year old Virgin A very funny movie. There was still time left to catch up on Only Fools &amp; Horses, and Little Britain.</p>
<p>Arrival into Orlando was the usual Crossing the coast at Cape Canaveral before heading inland over Sanford, and then the left turn to line up for a landing at Orlando International Airport to the South then a taxi across the active parallel runways to the gate.</p>
<p>This was a quick crossing Eight hours thirty eight minutes, the price of which was frequent bouts of turbulence, leaving me with the feeling that Id rather be sat upright in turbulence rather than flat on my back !</p>
<p>With little or no wait at Immigration, and Customs I was out of the Airport in under 30 minutes. It would have been quicker except for the double Bag Claim that we all know, and love at O.I.A. !</p>
<p>So all in all a good experience thats gone along way towards restoring my faith in the Virgin product.</p>
<p>Monday it&#8217;s jetBlue to Boston !</div>
